Go ahead. Read that sentence again, especially the highlighted bit. How're you doing with it?

I can just imagine other AP sentences:

"Democrats tried to link the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Church of England."

"Democrats tried to link George Steinbrenner to the New York Yankees."

"Democrats tried to link Thomas Jefferson to the Declaration of Independence."

"Democrats tried to link mass to inertia."

Can I please get a reporter who can just report a fact as a fact?
